Archaeological Evidences Related to the Manufacture of Lithics and Stone Tools

One of the characteristic features of chalcolithic in the Indian subcontinent was the presence of blade industry right from its beginning. On the basis of even distribution of debitage and blades at Navdatoli, Sankalia has suggested that every household prepared its own tools. The tools, such as hammer stones, fabricators, antler, copper punches, etcetera found at many sites might have been used for making blade tools.

A stonecutter’s workshop has been identified at the Daimabad site (Sali 1986: 98). Fourteen stone mullers were found lying on the partly exposed floor of that workshop beside a large and deep platter of the unbaked clay having vertical sides and flat base, embedded in the floor. The mullers were of varied shapes, including rectangular, sub-triangular, tapering, oval and barrel, the last named variety being closely similar to the modern type used in the region. Their occurrence in large number and in variety of shapes, in association with the raw material close to the platter, perhaps used for storing water for grinding the surface of mullers to make those smooth, suggested that those were the possessions of a stonecutter, who dealt in the supply of stone mullers to the inhabitants.
